Down in Lincoln County, there are few things they love as much as the “ping” of the bats come springtime. Baseball is a major pastime around the Homeseeker’s Paradise, with all local schools, public and private, churning out college athletes on the diamond year after year. But the playing fields for younger boys and girls were lacking — youth sports teams were always moving from old field to old field, fighting weeds and praying for plumbing, and the existing public sportsplex was unable to handle large crowds. With demand for a top-notch facility growing, the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors greenlighted a project by its Lincoln Civic Center Commission to study and construct a state-of-the-art youth baseball and softball facility, and as the contracted county engineer, Dungan Engineering was assigned the homework. Dungan’s $2.3 million plan saw the construction of what would become the United State Specialty Sports Association’s South Mississippi 2017 Park of the Year and host of the 2019 Dixie Youth Invitational World Series — four 220-foot baseball fields and a fifth 300-foot field with dugouts, lit by high-mast lights; connected by concrete walkways and featuring a central concession stand; bleachers and lawn-viewing areas; safety netting all around and four batting cages; with the entire facility surrounded by ample parking in an asphalt lot.
