Downtown Brookhaven is the center of the Homeseeker’s Paradise — for years it has remained small, close-knit, historic, charming. And a nightmare for traffic. Whitworth and Railroad avenues, the two north-south streets that access the quaint area divided by the main Canadian National railway from New Orleans to Chicago, would jam up tight any time two vehicles bigger than bicycle met on the two-way streets, and downtown merchants were making their displeasure with the parking situation well known. The city asked Dungan Engineering for a solution, and after a little research, the answer was clear and simple — converting Whitworth and Railroad into one-way streets. Dungan’s engineers worked closely with Dickerson & Bowen and Traffic Control Products to minimize the job’s impact, working a 48-hour shift to get the project kicked off and closed out with minimal interruption to local motorists. The updated roads allowed the addition of almost 50 additional angled parking spaces in the downtown area.
