Description:
Getting across a river can take a pretty long bridge — getting across the Pearl River and its swamps and floodplain in northwest Marion County takes a full mile of bridge. Usually, bridge jobs that big are not part of a county engineer’s duties, but Dungan Engineering was up for the challenge when county supervisors made the $25 million call. The 5,025-foot bridge, which changes elevation from end to end and curves around the landscape, is the centerpiece of the project, but not the only feature — Dungan also designed more than six miles of two-lane roadway from the river to Mississippi Highway 13, three smaller concrete bridges, a pair of concrete box culverts and 4,400 feet of concrete pipe. As county engineer, every step of the project fell to Dungan’s engineers — planning and design, environmental permitting, construction engineering, testing and inspection.
