The purpose of this project has been to enhance the community and leverage existing economic and community development efforts in Columbia and Marion County by building a Pearl River Basin Interpretive Plaza. A new parking lot was built by the City of Columbia in partnership with the Mississippi Development Authority primarily to serve Pioneer Aerospace, a major area employer. The new parking lot and the proposed plaza replaced an existing graveled lot and somewhat derelict green space. The Interpretive Plaza occupies the green space within that parking lot. Water from a natural flowing Artesian well within the Plaza flows down a Pearl River Basin scale model depicting the course of the river from its source in Choctaw County to its mouth at the Gulf of Mexico. Water captured in a catch basin representing the Gulf of Mexico is re-cycled to irrigate the Mississippi native trees and shrubs planted in the Plaza and parking lot.
