Description:
When Forrest Health built Highland Community Hospital in the City of Picayune, it was a great victory for community healthcare — that generated a small problem with nearby highways. The big, new hospital could not be adequately accessed through its single connection with U.S. Highway 11 and the new traffic being generated would causing backups on nearby Interstate 59 and its connection to Mississippi Highway 43. The city needed a new avenue to move patients in and out, and motorists around, the facility. To get traffic flowing smoothly again, Dungan Engineering designed Highland Parkway, a four-lane, divided-median thoroughfare that connected Highway 11, near the hospital, with Mississippi Highway 43 approximately one mile away. The $5.1 million highway features a pair of long-arm traffic signals with pedestrian crossings and signals, and a roundabout to help ease traffic flow to a nearby residential area.
